Glutamine and Colitis

It is well established that glutamine supplemented diets result in less severe intestinal damage in experimentally induced colitis. However, few studies have examined the mode of action of glutamine in reducing intestinal damage.

Rats were fed a diet rich in glutamine for 2 weeks. A control group consisted of a diet fed the protein cassein. The rats then had colitis chemically induced. The colitis presented itself in both its acute and chronic forms.

The groups of rats which were supplemented with glutamine gained more weight than the control group which had progressive weight loss. Colon weight, macroscopic, and microscopic damage scores for the glucomine groups were lower than in the control group. Inflamed colonic tissues were lower in the glutomine groups than in the control group and correlated well with disease severity. The authors conclude that a prophylactic glutamine supplementation changes the inflammatory activities of induced colitis.
